The Old Town Area Democratic Committee is hosting a Candidates' Evening on Monday, May 10, 7:00 p.m. at the Herbert Sargent Community center, 342 Bennoch Rd. in Stillwater.  Besides representatives from the gubernatorial campaigns, there will also be candidates from districts 13, 14, 18, 19, and 20.  Among those who will be present and participating are Sen. Libby Mitchell,
Reps. Emily Cain, Jim Martin, Richard Blanchard, Ben Pratt, Robert Duchesne, and candidate Jim Dill. Rep. Richard Blanchard and candidate James Dill of District 14 will be challenging each other in the June primary for the Democratic slot on the November ballot.  The evening is open to the public and all are welcome.

Election 2010

As the election campaigns for Maine state offices such as representative, senator, and governor grow closer, please take advantage of any opportunities in our town or surrounding communities to meet and speak with the Democrats currently in the races.  Also, while there is still time, please take advantage of Maine's Clean Election system and contribute to any local candidates that may be fundraising this way (to contribute online, click here).  And finally, please consider becoming active in the local Democratic committee - it is a vibrant and friendly group of volunteers, and we will always welcome fresh energy and ideas!

Riverfest 2009

This year's booth was a great success.  It was wonderful to interact with so many like-minded Oldtowners during the day, and to have a chance to put a face with the name.  We were stocked up on information pamphlets on the ballot questions, and also had some Maine state government info as well as a bowl of candy to share with all comers (thank you again for the treats, Senator Schneider).  The next stop - Election 2009 and its many questions to be answered, followed by a new year and another caucus.

Coming up on Saturday, June 20, 2009

The Penobscot Democratic Commitee Meeting will be held from 9:30-11:30 am at the EMLC Solidarity Center at 20 Ivers St. in Brewer.  Some items that will be discussed will be the upcoming Fourth of July parade and elections for state convention committees.  Following the meeting, a barbeque will be held - now they know how to have a meeting!

Citizens Together for Change - Community Service Event

On Saturday, February 21, from 10 am to 4 pm, Citizens Together for Change will hold a service event to support Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor's "Restore." Participants may work a shift of any length that suits them.  You do not have to stay for the entire time.

Our local Habitat affiliate needs help to set-up and stock their "Restore", a store that sells donated building materials at discounted prices.  Proceeds from this store would boost fundraising to ensure that more Habitat houses are built to low-income community members.

Volunteers could offer to paint, or perform minor repairs to the "Restore" building, work on a phone bank calling stores and contractors for donations, or they may even offer to use their vehicles to pick up donations and bring them to the "Restore."

If you have further questions about details of how you can help at this event, or at another time, please call Habitat's local executive director, Val Marsh, at 992-0704.

November 3,2008

ONE DAY and counting...

Crunch time is here.  It's time for the final push to help all the Maine Democratic candidates get over the top to victory in 2008.  Toward this goal, the Old Town Democratic Committee will be meeting on a weekly basis over the final few weeks to discuss and implement ways to help area campaigns.  If you've never attended one of the meetings, please come - we are a friendly bunch and we'll do our best to help you find some activities that you would enjoy doing.  Remember, your help in the next few weeks could make the difference in who we have representing us for the next 2 to 4 years!

You can vote now!

Absentee ballots are now being taken at the Old Town town offices - you can fill it out right there, and they will process the ballot on Election Day.  If you typically have a busy or unpredictable schedule, an absentee ballot may be just right for you, and will give you the security of having cast your ballot without having to worry about weather, emergencies, or running out of time.

Thank you to our spring/summer leader, Mike Fuller

Mike stepped down in September due to health reasons, but over his tenure oversaw the most active period in recent history of the Old Town Democratic Committee.  He lead us to increased visibility in the community, including participation in both the Canoe Hullaballoo and Riverfest, and helped create a committee structure that gave all who participated a voice and a feeling of contribution.  He also left the committee on solid financial ground (although donations are always welcome!) We will miss his leadership, but will work hard to carry out the vision that he had begun back in the days of the caucuses.
